If ZEN™ is positioned so close to FAM, why is the 3’ quencher required?

In many cases, the ZEN™ quencher is the predominant method for dye quenching. However, adding the 3'-IBFQ (Iowa Black Fluorescent Quencher) further reduces background and increases performance. In addition, there may be some sequences that favor the 3' quencher due to oligo folding when not annealed to a complementary sequence.
